Meatless Mondays

This idea has been floating around out there for a while. I had heard little snips about it here and there on the web, but I hadn’t really thought much about it. Then recently on Twitter, I started following a user called “Meatless Monday” . Today  was the day I decided to click and find out more.

So I don’t forget – first thing is to share the link to the Meatless Monday website. This initiative comes from Johns Hopkins and they are encouraging everyone to go meatless on Mondays. Here’s their snippet:

Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaigns, in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Our goal is to help reduce meat consumption 15% in order to improve personal health and the health of our planet. We provide the information and recipes you need to start each week with healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free alternatives. Presidents Wilson, Truman and Roosevelt galvanized the nation with voluntary meatless days during both world wars. By reviving this American tradition we can help address the challenges we face today. We can improve our health, reduce our carbon footprint and lead the world in the race to mitigate climate change.

I went nearly meatless (eating only the occasional chicken) for many years during high school and college. It was partly a political ‘save the animals’ statement and partly a feeling that meat was gross. I find myself coming back around to this place (especially after seeing the movie Food, Inc.). I’m not ready to become a vegetarian, but I am ready to cut (and clean up) my meat consumption. So I’m instituting Meatless Mondays in our house!! My husband jokes that I am turning us into a bunch of hippies, so he can just add this to the list 🙂

I hope you’ll consider going meatless at least one day a week! Not only is it good for you and our world, but also will broaden your horizons when it comes to kitchen adventures!! Now, I’m off to find some good meatless recipes. Stay tuned!

PS: Please comment if you’re with me on this! I’d love to know of others that do this!

we are meatless more than not over here actually. I only eat occasionally chicken and turkey, and since I’m the cook, we end up with meatless meals frequently. Last night we had angel hair pasta, tossed with white sauce and steamed broccoli and carrots. I cut up enough broc to fill a 2 qt pan, so it had plenty of veg in it to bulk it up. It would have been a nice dish with chicken, but we also agreed it didn’t need it. 🙂 I will look forward to your meatless posts!
